A CONFESSION OF THE FILM DIRECTOR

How did it all begin…

To make a movie — out of the blue — with no money, no equipment — it was a complete madness!

But the movie lived inside of me, alive were the images and replicas from the film: they were bigger than reality…

And, thus, in my absence, something had happened that had an effect on my fate and the fates of my friends.

One evening, my friends had got together on the roof, as usual, and invited their friends to join them for the party as well. One of the guys (Mike) had an idea for a game: «Tonight the sky is open! Let’s make wishes!» And the rest — all true to the original movie script — there is nothing to invent here!..

When a month later, having passed the entrance exams to the Institute of Cinematography I returned to Israel — this horrific event had already taken place.

My friends were waiting for me at the airport. Right there they told me about one girl who was invited to that small party on the roof while I was in Moscow — has died in the terrorist attack at «Dolfi». It was then that I heard that while playing that game together with everyone else, she made a wish: to remain forever young and beautiful!

I also found out that all of my friends were planning to go to the «Dolfi» Club that evening. Yet, something has stopped each and everyone of them from going there! That girl was the only person, out of the whole group, who made it to the dance club «on time!» And died at the entrance to «Dolfi.» 21 people dead, over 100 injured! I was in shock, stunned…

I did not know this girl. Yet «something» came into me … and settled permanently. It was as if someone decided to tell this story through me, to become its expert, investigator, and… not to allow to forget…

I began to de research and ask questions — who and how did arrive there on time, or was late that night. My friends and myself have interviewed almost everyone associated with the tragedy.

What had struck me the most, was that a lot of people had made plans to go to «Dolfi» that night.

Yet everyone had their own reason and a story to tell — «why they did not make it there.»

I got to hear the stories about others as well: of those who «did make» it to the «Dolfi»… Of those who died or suffered injuries at the entrance to the club.

As I continued with my research, I was discovering more and more shocking and horrifying coincidences! My story — about the girl who had died in the attack — was one out of a hundred!

But I found so many more other stories!

For instance, two sisters were on their way Dolfi. One of them put on a new blouse that belonged to the other sister. That one got mad and in a fit of temper wished her to die. The sister perished at «Dolfi’s» that night.

And what about dreams? How many coincidences were there in dreams!.. A mother who lost her daughter in the terrorist attack, had a dream the night before: that her house was full of rabbis in prayer. The rabbis announced that they came after her daughter… The mother could not talk her daughter out of going to the club. The girl died that night at Dolfi’s.

I began to think more and more about fate: about its labyrinths, riddles… What got in the way for some — to get to this dance club? What stopped them? And for others — why is it that nothing could stop them?! Neither mother, nor foreboding…

Why did somebody’s heel brake, someone became sick, or someone got called in to work?

How come that the suicide bomber — same age as those whom he was about to murder, stopped at no other place but there, at the entrance to the Russian dance club — not far from the mosque where he was just praying.

How does one get to interpret what had happened? Can we say it was just plain luck for those who did get to the «Dolfi», or was it indeed the «Divine» intervention?

I already could invision the main characters. I saw their dreams, as if I was transported to those filming locations. Inside of me sounded the music of the film, the beating of the film’s rhythm, I had dreamed in Signs…

I began looking for those who would make a movie or come up with funds in Israel … Then — in Moscow. A lot of people became interested in this idea — there were many studios that wanted to adapt this movie script in Moscow. Yet, as it usually happens — their producers couldn’t find the money…

Time was running out fast…

I was endlessly asked to rewrite my script. Each wanted it changed after their own fashion.

«When you rewrite it — we will film…» Even other writers were invited to assist in the hope that the new, revised version of the script will inspire someone to invest in making the movie. It took several years. As a result — just one thing remained from the initial idea: the hangout, the roof, and the wish. And when in another writer’s version a thug with a sawed-off shotgun appeared instead of the suicide bomber with explosives — I could no longer stand it!

I have decided to make a movie on my own. And to film it where the horrible event took place.

Immediately I began to search for those who care about this topic, in order to create a team.

The search was long. Such person was found — a talented novice operator Jack Entis. Looking back, I can say with certainty that if it wasn’t for him — I couldn’t have been able raise this project on my own!

We decided to complete the project in time for the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. There was still a load of people at the monument near the former nightclub «Dolfi.» We realized that we made the right decision.

Having created the right conditions, we advertised an invitation for all interested in filming of a movie about the terrorist attack in «Dolfi.» The ad read that the movie will be filmed without any pay — on a volunteer basis.

And what a surprise — people responded! It seemed as if the whole of Israel wanted to help us!

That was because everyone who came to us, was either directly or indirectly linked to this tragedy. Somebody was late that night to «Dolfi,» and somebody else lost their friends…

Musicians brought us music, film schools’ students shared equipment. It seemed — there it was: the filming will pass quickly and easily. We started out successfully.

The casting was extensive: we were looking for the young teenage actors.

Yet, already after a few weeks, first problems that experienced filmmakers warned us about began: it is impossible to make a movie without money! Their warnings came true: young actors missed shootings, and as for those who were older — they depended on work and family. We had to endlessly adjust to everybody’s schedule.

Shootings did not fit into any time-table. Initial cast had been replaced. As for the crew, they ran out of steam, having decided that we will not succeed in this endeavor with our equipment. So why strain oneself for nothing ? There was no time for a lot of thinking.

I turned to… Cosmos. And The Cosmos responded.

Once pilgrims came for a couple of days — for a Christian holiday in Jerusalem.

During the tea time, one of the guests suddenly looked at me strangely and said: «You will succeed! Don’t doubt yourself… I see people, many people, cameras, festivals — next to you… I see some movie… At the end… in the subtitles — there are many last names in black frames..

Are you filming something? Or…

I was all ears. What she was saying to me as if in a trance — there was no logical explanation — she couldn’t have seen any equipment, or have heard our conversations about the movie as well!

This is what the psychic related to me:

This movie of yours — it’s like a scream: through it souls that left us early are screaming. They are trying to say that the world is in danger… they want to be heard. Right now…they are here.

Near by: with you and within you… You are not the one making this movie. More likely — the movie is making you… They are giving you hints. As long as you do not abandon this endeavor.

Gradually, everyone who’s needed will come on their own and will do everything that’s needed for the movie. These people are few, but they are marked.

They will come.

For example, soon a guy will appear — hair down to his shoulders, «a mop-head» — he will help out a lot! It will be something. And the movie will be done. A little girl will appear, who’ll become the symbol of your movie. Read the signs! The Cosmos will tell and give you everything on its own. This movie is a window! Remember this! What the movie is about should be known by many and not only in Israel — everywhere!

It’s strange, yet most of what this «random» psychic, a pilgrim from Kazakhstan, had predicted — came true!

The first cast was replaced, a big filming crew ran off. We realized that it wasn’t without interference: someone spread rumors that if they will continue participating in shootings about the tragedy — it will have an effect on their fate. They will attract this nightmare upon themselves, and they themselves may suffer in a similar terrorist attack!

Having remained a few, we continued to film.

Hints and Blessings

Guests from different countries began appearing more and more in our home: people came for the sea. Perhaps that was the help from the Cosmos. I recieved a hint for our movie from each guest, from each person.

One time an Orthodox priest from Saint-Petersburg, Russia, was passing through. He sanctified the apartment, blessed us, and suggested that it would be good to open up a subject of not only a mother loosing her child, but a father as well. He left, having had changed into plain clothes.
And it turned out that he forgot his robe with a golden cross.

Our good friend from Moscow — a talented actor Max, having stayed with us, saw the robe: «Wow! Check this out! I want to try it on! Film me in this role! I have no idea what for, just film me!»

That is how the prayer of the Orthodox priest appeared in our movie. We scheduled the shooting on the next day — at the cemetery. Max dressed as the Orthodox priest and two other actresses of the movie were supposed to arrive there. I was looking forward to this complex scene: an extravagant Gothic dress, made especially by our costume designer, was awaiting for our actress as a surprise.

Yet it was precisely this actress that did not arrive!

We were standing at the entrance to the cemetery, hiding our equipment, in fear that we won’t be let inside with a big camera… A guy approached us:

— Are you a filming crew?

«That’s it,» I was thinking, «we are caught!» But he says:

— I’m Yuri Karpelov, your actress invited me here. Maybe you need help?

— Help?! Yes! Of course! Could you put on this dress? Our shooting is going down the drain…

And passed the package with the Gothic dress… — Dress? No problem!

And would you believe this? We shot Yuri’s hand and shoulder in the black dress and the face of the other actress, the one that did come. Partially, the shot scene was saved.

That was how Yuri Karpelov appeared — that «mop-headed» guy that the fortune teller predicted.

«This guy will become everything for your movie!»

And he really did become everything: composer, actor, operator, second film director… sound manager, editor… driver… And if one of the actors didn’t come, he was the substitute: he was Dima’s hand, Pasha’s voice, Anna’s elbow, and so on…

DREAMS AND SIGNS

Later on, a real shaman appeared in our home! The shaman conducted his ritual at our place, and in his own way, shaman-style, purified our home: «quieted the spirits». He let us film him. The image of shaman was useful for the nightmare scene within the movie!

There was no end to surprises!

Kabbalists had arrived. I received a blessing from Central Asia — from a Muslim woman: and same as before (!) she conducted a purification ritual with me.

There was an African ritual…

There was, as well, a blessing from christian Catholics… A blessing from the Orthodox priest was already received.. Soon, a French Orthodox Jew appeared. Every day he would light the candles, pray, and read Talmud…

Dreams and signs became my specialty. I’ve long collected dreams, and in particular also the dreams that people saw before this terrorist attack.

I used the signs in the movie. They play a big role with us. They foreshadow! The fact that almost nobody notices them is a different story… Except for the Hindu-Mike, who called on everyone to make wishes, and drew a hieroglyph on the floor, capable, according to his opinion, of changing fate… And he warned: «There’s no room for mistakes! It may come true!»

Then the Buddhists came. They helped to decipher the hieroglyph that I used in the movie, having snatched it from «my dreams». It was the beginning of a prayer «OM MANE PADME HUM!»

The idea is taken from a real story, where the Goth character receives a flashlight with hieroglyph as a present from her friend. The friend dies…but continues to communicate with her through this flashlight. The flashlight with pendants rings, when the Goth decides to cut her veins…

It so happened that I found myself encircled by mysticism… And it was leading me to a certain philosophy, that was already becoming larger than the initial idea for the movie!

«Purified and enlightened», I understood for good that all religions will be present in our movie! This is because we live in a country where all religions are present. And also because it is different faiths and their war with each other that often lead to tragedy! And we wanted to show a parallel where one mother blesses her daughter before she is leaving for the dance club, while another mother blesses her son to commit a terrorist attack, by blowing himself up together with his peers!..

The theme of religion plays a key role in our movie. We wanted to show that in the region of THE FORCE, a country of «prayer,» where in close vicinity of each other coexist temples of many religious concessions, where even the space speaks in different prayers — these horrible tragedies happen one after another!

One of our filming sessions took place in a mosque. We have shown that the Muslim religion is not to blame! A suicide bomber is praying in a mosque next to peaceful guys!

As for me, I’m certain: GOD IS ONE! And in the future all religions will be united: they have a common core within them!

Music sent out of nowhere

Without the music I couldn’t see my movie.

The music found us on its own: music of all trends was brought: ethnic middle-eastern, trance and heavy rock… Teenagers wrote hip-hop, and in breaking voices sang about how they don’t want to die… Street musicians and well-known groups gave us their music as a gift, so that it would sound in the movie in the memory of those that died at «Dolfi.» And it was the music in particular that was the soul of our movie. And it was without borders.

The music allowed us to realize that a lot of people are rooting with us for the fate of the movie!

And as it turned out… not only those, who are alive!..

An artist and an actress — Shanti, also brought us her music. She heard a phrase in her dream: «We will not stop dancing!» (This phrase is on the monument next to «Dolfi»). She saw the dance…and — heard the music. This music sounded inside her for a long time and wouldn’t leave
her alone, until she found on the internet the one who created it. It turned out to be a dead guy — a famous DJ from Moscow — Zolod. That’s how this trance came to us, that is to say, as if was sent from «the other world.»

Now, for sure, — we couldn’t turn back!

But REALITY was closing in on us: the hardest period was nearing — the editing!

A trial through «editing»

We still couldn’t find sponsors. Even though our producer, Albert, has appealed to many in Israel and even to Russian community: after all, the dead came from Russia and CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States). No one said — NO! Yet, in truth, no one said — YES!

We were looking for a movie editor. We knew that we’ll have to pay. But how much? Editors, having learned about salary, were disappearing one after another.

Miracles got tired of working for us.

So, in the beginning, Jack, having started to learn editing from zero, edited part of the movie. We were saving the film: our technique was not on the level. Actors often missed shootings: there weren’t enough large shots. In a non-budget project we could not demand from the actors — no haircuts, no makeover, and no leaving the country… In addition, as it was already stated, to get two-three actors together — that was a feat in itself.

All in all, due to all of this — our editing resembled sorcery more than a technical process! We had fights and melt-downs, yet stubbornly — from morning to night, having taken vacations at our own expense, — edited, edited, edited…

Every cloud has a silver lining — it «dawned upon me», that certain misgivings of the shootings could be salvaged — through a background voice. Nights through I was working on completion of the screenplay.

The main character was now speaking with the audience, having already been killed; she was telling us her story. Till its end. And only in the finale it is understood by everyone. Now the movie sounded like a confession. Through the movie, a monologue of eternity was carried…

The movie completely changed my nature.

I turned into a some sort of a tank, which pressed on and on, without knowing whether it’ll get there…and whether there’ll be another miracle behind the horizon.

But the miracles came back.

Yuri joined in on the editing: he had just completed a filming course at the university… And he had free evenings. Now we were certain that we’ll make it to the finish line!

All of a sudden a war started in Israel. Thunder of bombs, numbness and suspense…

I-phone warned about the sirens within several seconds time. Yet, there was no place for cover anyway. Our fanaticism was our cover. We went on with editing…

I meticulously sorted the material, Yuri was practicing sorcery with it…

Editing salvaged the image of the Goth. The editing helped show through a mystical dance her unwillingness to live… The editing filled in the image of a dead heroine — warmhearted and sunny — the one that never completed her portrait of mom, never met her father, and never finished her poetry.

Our actress, Lidia, finished the poems for her…

Yuri has managed to accentuate the signs and recreate the rhythm of nightmares … The editing has emphasized the work of the operator: Jack has caught with the lens the magic of life, with which the suicide bomber was parting a couple of hours before the explosion. The editing was an open sea. We drifted and drifted. As for the shore, it was becoming farther and farther away… But — hooray! It looked like a run of bad luck was over.

The war was over.

Soon the producer has announced that the first festival awaits us: «Kinole» — they liked the trailer. It was necessary to turn in at least the draft of the movie before the deadline.

Having already received an award at the festival, we suddenly woke up: it turns out we are a team!

We are capable of driving the project to the end!..

Two years passed since the time we announced casting for the movie «The Stolen Wish.» And several years prior to that were spent for research, looking for money, and for the screenplay itself…

«Your movie is late! It’s of no current interest!» — we were told. But no. While we were making the film, Israel freed thousands of terrorists from jail, who spread out through the whole world.

That do we want? We simply want this movie to be seen… And what else? Clearly, it is a non-budget movie! But the energy, it is there. The movie will leave no one indifferent — too many souls have been working on it.

My strength came back. And it attracted to us special people. It is thanks to them that we arrived to you! ))

We are «The Latecomers.» We could have made it then to club «Dolfi.» On June 1, 2001. But, thanks to pure luck, we were late. We, the latecomers, made a movie about those, whom nothing could stop, who came «on time.» We are dedicating this movie in their name: «The Stolen Wish.»

I hope that this movie will have an affect on the audience.

Despite the tragic finale, it’s calling on us to LIVE and REJOICE, to be together and get closer to The Light. It’s about love, will. It’s about the fact that LIFE GOES ON…

КАК ВСЁ НАЧИНАЛОСЬ…

Снимать фильм – на ровном месте – без денег, без аппаратуры — это было — полное безумие! Но фильм жил во мне, жили картины и реплики из фильма: они были ярче реальности…

Что послужило причиной к съёмке фильма «Украденное желание»

В один из вечеров мои друзья собрались как всегда на крыше и позвали своих приятелей… Один из друзей предложил игру: «Сегодня небо открыто! Давайте загадаем желания!» А дальше – всё как по сценарию – здесь и сочинять нечего!..

Когда через месяц, пройдя экзамены во ВГИК, я вернулась в Израиль, — это жуткое событие уже произошло.

Они встречали меня в аэропорту, мои друзья. Они наперебой рассказывали мне о том, что в теракте в клубе «Дольфи» погибла девушка, которую пригласили на вечернюю тусовку на крыше… И тогда я услышала, что и она играла вместе со всеми в эту игру, и что она загадала тогда желание: остаться молодой и красивой навсегда!

Я узнала о том, что все мои друзья собирались в тот вечер в «Дольфи». Но что-то остановило каждого! Из нашей компании в тот вечер «вовремя» попала на эту дискотеку только она! И погибла у входа в «Дольфи». Погиб 21 человек, а ранено – больше ста! Это был шок…

Я не знала эту девушку. Но «что-то» вошло в меня… и поселилось надолго. Как будто кто-то решил через меня рассказать эту историю, стать её экспертом, исследователем и… не дать забыть…

Я стала искать и расспрашивать – кто как попал или опоздал на эту дискотеку. Мы с друзьями брали интервью почти у каждого, с кем встречались в нашей активной жизни. Вот что поразило: очень многие в тот вечер собирались в «Дольфи». Но у всех была своя история и причина – «почему они туда не успели». Также ко мне попали и истории о других: тех, кто – ДА, «успел»… Тех, кто погиб или пострадал у входа в клуб. В ходе своих исследований, я всё больше находила потрясающие или ужасающие совпадения! Моя история – о погибшей девушке – была одна из ста! Но сколько ещё историй я нашла!

Например, две сестры собирались в Дольфи. Одна из них одела новую кофту своей сестры. Та обиделась и сгоряча пожелала ей смерти. Сестра погибла в Дольфи в ту ночь.

А сны? Сколько совпадений в снах!.. Матери погибшей девочки за день приснился сон: что её дом был полон молящихся раввинов. Раввины объявили, что пришли за её дочерью… Мать не смогла отговорить дочь. Девочка погибла в ту ночь в Дольфи.

Я стала всё больше думать о судьбе: о её лабиринтах, загадках… Что помешало одним – попасть на эту дискотеку? Что их остановило? А других – не остановило ничто! Ни мать, ни предчувствия…

Почему – у кого-то сломался каблук, случился приступ… или… кого-то вызвали на дежурство?

Почему шахид – ровесник тех, кого ему предстояло убить, остановился именно здесь, у русской дискотеки: недалеко от мечети, в которой он помолился перед этим?

Продуманный ли это план или случайное совпадение? Или что-то «Высшее» стоит за этой случайностью?
Я уже видела самих героев, я видела их сны, я как будто переносилась в места съёмок, во мне звучала музыка, и бился ритм фильма, снились Знаки…

Я стала искать тех, кто снимет фильм или достанет средства в Израиле… Потом – в Москве…. Эта идея интересовала всех – многие студии хотели взять этот сценарий в Москве. Но как это обычно бывает – их продюсеры не находили деньги. Многие объясняли это тем, что тема терроризма не актуальна в России!

Уходило время…

Меня просили бесконечно переделывать сценарий. Причём каждый – на свой лад. «Переделаешь – снимем»… И даже подключали других сценаристов в надежде, что именно новый вариант сценария поможет увлечь кого-то, вложить средства и снять фильм. На это ушло несколько лет. В итоге – от первоначальной идеи осталось только одно: тусовка, крыша и желание. И когда — вместо шахида со взрывчаткой — у другого сценариста уже появлялся … бандит с обрезом, — я не выдержала!

Я решила снять фильм сама. И снять его там, где произошло это жуткое событие.

И тут же начала поиски тех, кому эта тема небезразлична, чтобы создать команду.

Поиски были долгими. И такой нашёлся – талантливый начинающий оператор Джек Энтис. Оглядываясь назад, могу с уверенностью сказать: если бы не он, — я бы сама не подняла этот проект!

Мы решили начать и закончить проект к 10-летию трагедии. Людей у постамента у бывшего клуба «Дольфи» по-прежнему было море. Мы поняли, что наше решение было верным.

Воссоздав нужную обстановку, мы дали объявление о том, что приглашаем желающих на съёмки фильма о теракте в «Дольфи». В объявлении говорилось, что фильм будет сниматься бесплатно: на общественных началах.

И вот сюрприз – люди откликнулись! Казалось – весь Израиль хочет нам помочь!

Потому что каждый пришедший был косвенно или прямо связан с этой трагедией.
Кто-то опоздал тогда в «Дельфинариум», а у кого-то погибли друзья или знакомые… Музыканты приносили нам музыку, студенты киношкол делились аппаратурой… Казалось – вот оно: съёмка пройдёт легко и быстро! Мы удачно стартовали.

Кастинг был обширный: подбирали мы в основном неопытных актёров. Но уже через пару недель начались первые проблемы, те, о которых предупреждали матёрые киношники: фильм снять без денег – невозможно! Их предупреждения сбылись: юные актёры пропускали съёмки, а те, кто постарше – зависели от работы и семьи. Нам приходилось бесконечно подстраиваться под всех.

Съёмки не вмещались ни в какой график. Сменился первый состав. А съёмочная группа выдохлась и охладела, решив, что нашей техникой мы не осилим эту затею. А зачем тогда и напрягаться зря? Энтузиазм кончился, силы тоже. Это был поворотный момент. Долго раздумывать было некогда. Я обратилась к …
пространству.

И Пространство откликнулось.

Однажды к нам приехали на пару дней паломники – на Христианский праздник в Иерусалиме. Во время чаепития, одна из гостей, вдруг — посмотрела на меня как-то странно и произнесла: «У тебя получится! Не сомневайся… Я вижу людей, много людей, кинокамеры, фестивали – рядом с тобой… Какой-то фильм вижу… В конце… в титрах – много фамилий в чёрных рамках… Вы что – снимаете что-то?
Или…»
Я вся превратилась в уши. То, что она говорила как в трансе – нельзя было объяснить – никаких подсказок, никакой аппаратуры она не могла видеть, и слышать наши разговоры о фильме – тоже!

То, что поведала мне ясновидящая:

«Этот ваш фильм – он как крик: через него кричат души, те, которые рано ушли. Они пытаются сказать, что мир в опасности… они хотят быть услышанными. Они сейчас… здесь. Рядом: с тобой и в тебе… Это не ты делаешь этот фильм. Скорей – фильм делает тебя… Они подсказывают тебе. Не торопись. Это будет не скоро. Забудь о сроках, которые у тебя в бумажках – всё будет ещё сложней и дольше.
Но силы тебя не оставят. Если ты не оставишь эту затею. Постепенно они сами – все кто надо – будут приходить и делать всё, что надо для этого фильма. Таких людей мало, но они отмечены. Они придут.

Скоро, например, появится парень – волосы до плеч, «лохматый» — он очень поможет! Забудь про свои сценарии – фильм будет меняться. Читай знаки!

Пространство всё само подскажет тебе и даст. Это фильм – окно! Запомни это! То, о чём этот фильм – должны узнать многие и не только в Израиле – везде!

Странно, но многое, что предсказала эта «случайная» ясновидящая – паломница из Казахстана, — подтвердилось! Сменился первый состав,
разбежалась большая съёмочная группа. Мы поняли, что не обошлось без вмешательства: некто распространил среди них слухи, что если они и дальше будут участвовать в съёмках о трагедии, то это повлияет на их судьбу, — они притянут к себе этот кошмар и сами могут пострадать в подобном теракте!

Мы, оставшимся малым составом – продолжали съёмки. Альберт – наш продюсер — подставил тогда своё плечо. Не знаю как – но он умел находить во мраке горизонт. «Не переживай! Мы сможем, мы достучимся. Нам помогут». И это можно сравнить с кромкой берега, которая показывалась в открытом море. Вот он берег – ещё немного и ты у цели. Если бы не Альберт и его поддержка – не знаю, хватило ли бы у нас пороха «доплыть». Это давало нам ощущение, что мы уже у цели! Оказывается – это важно. Даже не смотря на то, что берег опять и опять
оказывался миражом. Но Альберт не сдавался – и пока мы с головой погружались в проект, он упрямо продолжал поиски… И когда уже рядом не осталось почти никого – он остался с нами — до конца.

Подсказки и Благословения

В нашем доме стали всё чаще появляться гости из разных стран: люди приезжали к морю. Возможно, это и была помощь от Пространства. От каждого гостя, от каждого человека я получала подсказку к нашему фильму!

Как-то у нас был проездом святой отец (из Санкт-Петербурга). Он освятил квартиру, благословил нас, и подсказал, что в нашем фильме хорошо бы раскрыть не только мать, потерявшую ребёнка, но и отца. Он уехал, переодевшись в штатское. И — обнаружилось, что он забыл свою рясу с золотым крестом!

Наш московский друг – талантливый актёр Макс, заехав к нам, увидел эту рясу: «О! Вот так дела! Я хочу померить её! Снимите меня в этой роли! Не знаю для чего, но снимите!» Так в нашем фильме появилась молитва святого отца. Мы назначили съёмки назавтра – на кладбище.

Туда должны были подъехать Макс в одежде православного батюшки и две главные актрисы. Я предвкушала эту сложную сцену: шикарное готическое платье, специально выполненное нашей художницей по костюмам, ждало нашу актрису в качестве сюрприза. НО ИМЕННО ЭТА АКТРИСА НЕ ПРИЕХАЛА!

Мы стояли у входа на кладбище, прятали свою аппаратуру, боясь, что с большой камерой нас туда не пропустят… К нам подошёл парень: — Вы: съёмочная группа?

«Ну, — думаю, — засекли нас!» А он: — Я Юра Карпелов, ваша актриса пригласила
меня сюда. Может, надо помочь? — Помочь?! Да! Конечно! Можешь надеть это платье? У нас съёмка срывается… И передала парню свёрток с готическим платьем… — Платье? Без проблем!

И что ж? Мы снимали восьмёркой — руку и плечо Юры в чёрном платье и лицо главной героини, которая пришла. Частично отснятая сцена была спасена.

Так появился Юра Карпелов: тот «лохматый» парень, которого предсказала ясновидящая. «Этот парень будет всем для фильма!» И он действительно стал всем: композитор, актёр, оператор, второй режиссёр… звукорежиссёр, монтажёр… водитель… И если не приходил кто-то из актёров, Юра был его заменой: он был рукой Димы, голосом Паши, локтем Анны и т.д и т.п…

Сны и Знаки

Потом в нашем доме появился настоящий шаман! Шаман провёл у нас свой ритуал, и по-своему, по шамански, очистил наш дом: «успокоил духов».

Разрешил поснимать его. Образ шамана нам пригодился для сна-кошмара в фильме!

Конца и края не было сюрпризам!
К нам приехали — кабалисты.

Из Средней Азии я получила благословение от мусульманки: и опять тоже самое (!) она провела со мной обряд очищения.

Был и африканский ритуал…

Было и благословение от христианских католиков…

От православного батюшки благословение уже было получено…

Вскоре появился ортодоксальный иудей из Франции. Каждый день он зажигал свечи и молился, читая талмуд…

Сны и знаки – стали моей фишкой. Я давно собирала сны, а в частности и сны, которые снились людям перед этим терактом.

В фильме я применила знаки. Они играют у нас огромное значение. Они – предупреждают! Другое дело, что их почти никто не замечает… Кроме Мишки-индуса, который призвал всех загадывать желания, и нарисовал на полу иероглиф, меняющий по его мнению, судьбу… И предупредил: «Ошибаться нельзя! Может – исполниться!»

Потом были буддисты. Они помогли расшифровать иероглиф, который я
применила в фильме, вырвав его из «своих снов»… Он был началом молитвы «ОМ МАНЭ ПАДМЕ ХУМ!»

Идея взята из реальной истории, где героиня-готка получает фонарик с иероглифом от своей подруги в подарок. Подруга погибает. Но… продолжает общаться с готкой через этот фонарик. Фонарик с подвесками звенит, когда, в отчаяньи, готка решает вскрыть себе вены…

Получилось так, что я просто оказалась в кольце мистики… И она меня вела к некой философии, которая становилась уже больше первоначальной идеи фильма!

«Очищенная и просветлённая», я окончательно поняла, что в нашем фильме будут все религии! Потому что мы живём в стране, где соседствуют все религии. И ещё потому, что религии: их война друг с другом, — часто приводит к трагедии! И мы хотели показать, что мать благословляет свою дочь перед её уходом в клуб, и — провести параллель, что другая мать благословляет своего сына совершить
теракт, взорвать себя вместе с другими, его ровесниками!..

Тема религии играет ключевую роль в нашем фильме. Мы хотели показать, что в МЕСТЕ СИЛЫ, в «намоленной» стране, где соседствуют храмы многих религиозных концессий, где даже пространство звучит разными молитвами, — происходят одна за другой — такие ужасные трагедии!

Одна из наших съёмок проходила в мечети. Мы показали, что мусульманская религия не виновата! Вместе с мирными парнями – в мечети молится шахид!

Рядом, на коленях стоят: и тот, кто убьёт, — и тот — кого убьют сегодня через несколько часов!

Сама я убеждена: БОГ ЕДИН! И религии в будущем будут объединены: в них единая суть!

Музыка – посылка из ниоткуда

Без музыки я не видела своего фильма.

Музыка нас находила сама: приносили музыку всех направлений: восточную этническую, транс и тяжёлый рок … Хип-хоп сочинили тенейджеры, которые ломающимися голосами пели о том, что они не хотят умирать… Уличные музыканты и известные группы дарили нам свою музыку, чтобы она звучала в фильме в память погибших в «Дольфи». И именно музыка – была душой нашего фильма. И она была безгранична. Музыка дала нам понять, что с нами болеют за судьбу фильма – очень много людей!

И оказалось… не только тех, кто жив!..

Наша художница Шанти тоже принесла нам музыку. Она услышала во сне фразу:

«Мы не перестанем танцевать!» (Эта фраза есть на монументе «Дольфи»). Она увидела танец… и – она услышала музыку. Эта музыка долго звучала в ней и тревожила, пока она не нашла в интернете того, кто создал её. Им оказался погибший парень – известный ди-джей из Москвы – Золод. Так этот транс пришёл к нам, прямо скажем, как посылка из «другого пространства»…

Теперь уж точно — нам нельзя было отступать!

Но надвигалась РЕАЛЬНОСТЬ: приближался самый трудный – монтажный период!

Испытание «монтажём»
Денег не прибавилось. Хотя наш продюсер Альберт обращался ко всем инстанциям в Израиле и даже к русской общине: ведь погибшие были выходцами из России и СНГ. Никто не говорил – НЕТ! Правда, никто и не говорил – ДА!

Мы искали монтажёра. Знали, что платить надо. Но сколько? Монтажёры, узнавая о цене, исчезали один за другим.

Чудо устало работать на нас.

И вот сначала Джек, изучая монтаж с нуля, отмонтировал часть фильма. Мы спасали фильм: наша техника была не на высоте. Актёры часто пропускали съёмки: крупных кадров не хватало. В без бюджетном проекте мы не могли требовать от актёров – не стричься, не менять имидж и … не уезжать из Израиля… Да и, как уже было сказано, собрать двух-трёх актёров вместе – было просто подвигом.

В общем, из-за всего этого – наш монтаж больше напоминал колдовство, чем технический процесс! Мы ссорились, психовали, но упрямо — с утра до вечера, взяв отпуск за свой счёт, — монтировали, монтировали, монтировали…

Нет худа без добра – «мне пришло», что отдельные недостатки съёмки можно спасти закадровым текстом. Я ночами дорабатывала сценарий.
Главная героиня теперь говорила со зрителем, уже будучи убитой, она рассказывала нам свою историю. До конца. И только в финале — это понимают все. Теперь фильм звучал исповедью. Теперь через фильм вёлся монолог из вечности…

Фильм полностью поменял мой характер. Я превратилась в какой-то танк, который прёт и прёт вперёд, не зная, доедет ли… И будет ли за горизонтом опять Чудо!

Но чудо вернулось.

Юра подключился к монтажу: он только что закончил кино-курс в университете…

И у него освободились вечера. Теперь уж точно дотянем до победы!

Внезапно в Израиле началась война. Грохот бомб, оцепенение и неизвестность…Айфон предупреждал о сиренах за несколько секунд. Но укрытий рядом всё равно не было! Укрытием был наш фанатизм. Мы продолжали монтаж…

Я тщательно сортировала материал, Юра колдовал над ним…

Монтаж спас образ готки. Монтаж помог раскрыть через загадочный танец – о её нежелание жить… Монтаж дополнил образ погибшей героини – сердечной и лучистой – той, которая так и не дорисовала портрет матери, не встретилась с отцом и не дописала стихи.

Стихи за неё дописала сама героиня — наша актриса Лида…

Юра умудрился подчеркнуть знаки и воссоздать ритм снов-кошмаров… Монтаж подчеркнул работу оператора: Джек объективом уловил магию жизни, с которой прощался шахид за пару часов до теракта. Монтаж был открытым морем. Мы плыли и плыли. А берег всё отодвигался…

Но – ура! Похоже – чёрная полоса миновала. Война кончилась.

Вскоре Альберт объявил, что нас ждёт первый фестиваль: «Киноле» — им понравился трейлер к фильму. И туда надо сдать к сроку хотя бы черновой вариант фильма. И, уже получив благодарность на фестивале, мы вдруг очнулись: а мы – команда! ))) Мы способны довести проект до конца!..

Два года прошло с тех пор, как мы объявили о кастинге к фильму «Украденное желание». И несколько лет до этого — ушло на исследование, поиск средств и сам сценарий…

«Ваш фильм опоздал! Это уже не актуально!» — говорили нам… Но нет. Израиль, пока мы делали фильм, выпустил на свободу тысячи террористов, которые разошлись по всему миру.

Чего мы хотим? Мы просто хотим, чтобы этот фильм увидели… А что ещё?

Понятно, что он без бюджетный! Но энергия, она там есть. Равнодушных не будет – слишком много душ работало и работает над ним. На стадии постпродакшн к нам подключились Галина, Клара, Беата и Кирилл. Новые таланты, новые энтузиасты. Это — вливание новой энергии: тема трагедии в «Дольфи» продолжает волновать людей… Сила вернулась. И притянула к нам особенных людей.

Благодаря которым — мы и попали к вам! )))

Мы — «Опоздавшие». Мы могли попасть тогда в клуб в «Дольфи»: 1 июня 2001 года. Но мы — по счастливой случайности — опоздали. Мы, опоздавшие, сделали фильм о тех, кого — ничто не остановило, кто пришёл «вовремя». Мы посвящаем им этот фильм: «Украденное желание».

Мы надеемся, что этот фильм окажет влияние на зрителей.

Не смотря на трагичность исхода, он призывает нас ЖИТЬ и РАДОВАТЬСЯ, быть вместе и приближаться к Свету. Он о любви, воле.

Он о том: что ЖИЗНЬ ПРОДОЛЖАЕТСЯ…

Feature presentation of a movie about victims of a terrorist attack at Delfinarium.

A feature presentation of a movie dedicated to the memory of the victims of the terrorist attack near the Tel Aviv Delfinarium took place in Rishon le Zion.

On July 17, in «Mofet» auditorium of Rishon le Zion, a premiere of a feature film by Nika Armani, «The Stolen Wish» — made in the memory of the victims of the terrorist attack near the Tel Aviv Delfinarium on June 1, 2001 — was screened.  Film’s presentation was held under the auspices of the Chairman of the Knesset Immigration and Absorption Committee, Knesset member from the party «Yesh Atid» Konstantin (Yoel) Razvozov, who took an active part in organizing the event.

«It is a great honor for me to be here today, together with you.  Having received the invitation, I contemplated for a long time the words with which to express the pain of the loss that lives within us from that day on.  For us, the Israelis, the Delfinarium will forever remain in our memory as a synonym of awful tragedy and unending pain,» — those were the opening words of Konstantin Razvozov on the evening of the presentation.  In his speech the Knesset member paid respect to each of the dead by reading their names out laud.  Upon this, memorial candles were lit on the stage and all present stood during the announcement of the names of the dead.

The movie is based on real events: a terrorist attack in Delfinarium in 2001 in Tel Aviv.  It is a feature project, created by a team of enthusiasts, who made it using their personal funds.

«To shoot a movie out of the blue — without money and equipment — was a complete madness!  Yet this movie lived inside of me,  the pictures and replicas were alive and brighter than reality…», — said in her speech the movie director and screenwriter, Nika Armani.  «Not only famous, but also inexperienced actors were involved to participate and to play themselves: young men and women with their own problems and joys that have the ability to dream.  They play those that dance and rejoice knowing that their whole life lies ahead of them.  It is a movie about those whose life was interrupted without ever having started, those that will never stop dancing.

This movie is about wishes coming true, even if it’s at the expense of life.»

«I would like to thank our entire crew, all of the actors and musicians, who worked without pay, on enthusiasm alone, and who put their soul into this film!  And I’m asking you not to judge us too harshly!  The movie could have been better.  Yet we succeeded in expressing through it our thought and our pain!  Despite the tragic ending, it calls upon us to live and be happy, to be together and to approach light.  It is about love and will.  It is about the fact that life goes on.»

Each of us ponders which destiny awaits him, which fate is intended for his children. And, what, namely, is the meaning of fate? Does it happen to be something programmed and written in stone?

On the 1st of June, 2001, at 23:45 (Israel time) a suicide bomber representing «Palestinian Islamist Jihad», Said Hutori, age 22, resident of Qalqiliya, committed a terrorist attack by blowing himself up in the midst of a crowd at the entrance to the night club «Dolfi» on Tel-Aviv’s seafront. 21 people dead and 120 with injuries of varying severity. The age of the dead — from 14 to 32.

Was the fate of the dead on this day to arrive to the night club and be murdered? Was that the purpose of young people just beginning to choose their path in life?

There are no answers to these questions.

There are just facts, proving only that one person is capable of destroying dozens of lives. There’s as well the fact that he chose this destiny on his own, and through this, changed the fates not only of those who died, but also of those who survived. His purpose in life was to destroy at its root the purpose of these young people, who could have changed in their life the fates of others, and possibly, the fate of their country, by realizing their ordinary everyday plans.

The question is, how fair or not, the fate disposed of these lives. Indeed, many weren’t at the club thanks to a mere accident. Similarly, among the dead were those who, perhaps, found themselves at the spot against their will.

How to perceive this situation?

The question is rhetoric. For those who lost their close ones in this horrible tragedy the memory of this day will never be erased. Similarly, those to whom the fate turned its brighter side should not forget decades later about what happened.

That is exactly why the purpose of the survivors is to remember and to remind others about it.

That is why those for whom it still hurts will not stop talking about the pain.

That is why those who care do their utmost so that others also become indifferent.

That is why those who sympathize want others to sympathize as well.

That is why books and articles are written, and movies are made.

That is why, following these examples, a filming of «The Stolen Wish» is taking place right now in Israel, with a plot based on real life stories.

Director and film producer Nika Armani, has gathered a group of people indifferent to this event.

Professionals, and also talented and ambitious individuals have gathered absolutely without pay for the making of this movie, so as to once more remind about the tragedy that took place, and that this could have happened to anyone, as well as to ask from fate that this wouldn’t keep
happening.

A movie  “The Stolen Wish”  is a first non-documentary, art project for the creative union of Yuriy and Nika, which came to life  largely through the efforts of a team of enthusiasts.  For them, the attack on the nightclub «Dolphinarium» is not only a terrible event that shook Israel and the international community back in 2001 and claimed the lives of dozens of innocent teenagers, but rather a very personal tragedy, which killed friends and people close to them.

Filming was done using personal funds. Attracted to participate were not only known, but also non-professional actors who play themselves  — young kids with their problems and  joys, those that are able to dream.  They are playing the roles of those who know, as they dance, that they have their whole life in front of them.

This is the movie about those, whose life was torn, before it had time to begin.  This is the movie about those that will never stop dancing.
This movie is about fulfillment of wishes.

The movie «The Stolen Wish» received an award at the festival named “KINOLE” in Haifa for «Contribution to Israeli Cinema.» Premiere took place at the festival. The movie was in the top three best films of the festival in November 2012.

Synopsis for the Film by Nika Armani

The Stolen Wish

 

The movie is based on real events: the act of terrorism in the Dolphinarium of 2001, in Tel Aviv.

It was an ordinary evening. No one expected or anticipated anything unusual, with one exception. A  teen  girl, who just turned eighteen, was experiencing a continuous headache.

As always, a group of close friends was having fun on a rooftop of an apartment building — dancing, drinking and entertaining each other with jokes. The night was filled with  falling stars and flying satellites  – a good enough reason to make a wish, which each one of them did.

The group of young friends on the rooftop began to disperse. A great event awaited them. They took their young and flourishing energy filled with life and headed to the dance club named  «Dolphinarium». It was very important to be there on time, before midnight, since the entrance was limited. However, none of the eight teenaged friends made it there, except one. She won’t get called in to work. She won’t  break her heel.

She won’t get talked out of going by her mother. Mysteriously, it seemed that nothing could stop her from arriving right on time, unlike her friends. Their trip there was filled with obstacles, which they were not able to overcome, thus saving their lives from a horrifying explosion at the entrance to the club.
Perhaps it was that wish she made on the roof  –  to remain forever young and beautiful…

Or it could be because the young suicide-bomber, hiding in the crowd of dancers, realized his wish as well …

There has not remained a single place on earth (Beslan, Moscow, Tel Aviv, New York, London …) where one would feel safe in the face of the senseless and ruthless murderer – the international terrorism.

Yet, this is not the only theme accented in the movie  –  otherwise it would be a documentary project.

This movie questions fatal turns, signs, and destiny riddles. The plot probes the intricate web of destinies that connects mankind and searches for the answer to how one man’s destiny affects the others.

The author investigated a large set of stories from the lives of those who became victims of terrorist attacks. This research lies at the basis of the film’s
creation.
